Times letters: Special advisers and Johnson’s grip on power

Sir, I admire the decision of Sajid Javid to stand by his advisers and resign as chancellor. As a civil servant I worked as a communications adviser in the Ministry of Defence, the Department of Education and Employment, the Cabinet Office, the Home Office and in No 10, where I had to face the formidable Alastair Campbell. But if you faced up to him and defended your department’s stance on issues he had the grace to back down and accept other views.

Mr Javid was right to resist the arm-twisting demand to throw out his advisers. He did the honourable thing. I am appalled at the influence that Dominic Cummings has had on the government’s media policy. No prime minister should employ someone unelected
